Produced by the Cultural Department of the Municipality of Ancona, on the occasion of 2400 years from the city founding, Lapidary focuse on the historical value of commemorative plaques in the municipal area. These artifacts, actually "minor objects" within the urban landscape, are sources of inescapable historical value. Plaques and epigraphs, endured by the ravages of time, often made illegible by the carelessness of men or "hidden" from view simply by custom, can be again one of the community's interest, not only by means of their historical and scientific cataloging. Art can indeed renew their original purpose (that is mass communication tools), reproducing their texts by means of contemporary technology.
Three video animations play back the transcribed and typeset words from 27 most significant epigraphs; the sentences flow one after the other and overlap the backgrounds depicting a few decorative motifs previously drawn upon stone surfaces.
Videos are beamed onto a three dimensions screen, a large textile volume that alludes to architectural artifacts. Noteworthy, the art of weaving embodies the symbolism of speech and memory.
Finally, the photo-historical section (curator: Giampaolo Milzi) provides further information. Nine large format photographs reproduce the same influential plaques and epigraphs (because of the events they celebrate or because of their artistic value) providing the visitors brief comments and historical information related to the events celebrated.
Due to the lack of a specific city museum where collecting plaques and epigraphs definitively (a lapidary, in fact), this installation by Voyagerlab (Massimo Cartaginese_Oskar Barrile) is the attempt to set up a temporary and virtual one.
